Porcelain Veneers Process: What to Expect?

african american woman with porcelain veneers smiling

Have you found yourself wishing you could change your smile? Maybe you’ve heard that porcelain veneers can give you a whole new smile, but you’re not sure exactly how they work. We’ve broken down exactly what you can expect, appointment by appointment, to help you prepare for this permanent change to your smile.

Consultation

Before we even begin your treatment, we bring you in for a consultation. At this meeting, we go over your goals for your smile – do you want to cover up chips, close a small gap, or make multiple drastic changes? – and work with you to design your dream smile. We build this dream smile in our computer software so we can send this to our dental lab. The lab will use our design to create your veneers. At your consultation, we also talk with you about your expected costs and your payment options.

First Appointment: Preparation

When you come in for your first appointment, which is often grouped with your consultation, we start the process for getting you your dream smile. In addition to the smile design we create together, we also make sure that the lab has accurate impressions of your teeth. We want your veneers to fit great, so these impressions are vital. In order to take impressions that will allow your veneers to fit snugly and blend in with your surrounding teeth, we have to remove some enamel. Removing the enamel ensures that once we’ve bonded your veneers to your teeth, they don’t feel too bulky or stand out too much. After removing the enamel and taking impressions, we usually fit you with temporary veneers to keep your teeth protected until your permanent veneers are ready.

Second Appointment: A New Smile

When your veneers are back from the lab, we bring you in for the placement appointment. After removing the temporaries, we test the fit to make sure everything feels comfortable and your new look is what you pictured. Once we’re all satisfied, we bond the veneers to your teeth and you’re all set! We send you home with care instructions but know that after a day or two, you can get back to your normal dental hygiene routine. Brush and floss like normal – your veneers will stay in place and last for years to come.

The porcelain veneers process is actually very simple, and we think you’ll love the results. Contact us to schedule a veneers consultation and see what we can do to give you a smile you can’t wait to show off.

Do Dental Implants Feel Natural?

senior woman on park bench wondering if dental implants feel natural

One of the first questions we get during a dental implants consultation is, “Will they feel like my natural teeth?” Implants are the preferred tooth replacement options because, unlike dentures, they give wearers the most natural look and feel. But just how natural do they feel?

What Are Dental Implants?

In order to get a grasp on how implants feel, it’s important to understand what a dental implant actually is. If you are missing a tooth – whether because of a dental trauma or because you’ve had it extracted – a dental implant serves as a replacement for the tooth root. It consists of a titanium screw placed into the jaw bone and a post. The titanium is biocompatible, which means that it can fuse with bone and become a solid foundation for the screw and restoration that goes on top. The restoration part of the implant is a dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on how many teeth you need replaced.

How Natural Do Implants Feel?

Because a dental implant is replacing a missing tooth, you don’t have any feeling in the implant itself. Any feeling you have comes from the surrounding gum tissue. That means that the implant doesn’t feel exactly like your natural tooth. With your natural teeth, you have tooth roots that have nerves that feel sensations – heat, cold, pressure, etc. An implant can’t feel these things because there aren’t roots or nerves. You have to rely on the nerves in the surrounding gum tissue to provide the sensation for the missing tooth. Other than that, though, a dental implant looks and functions just like natural teeth. We can design them to blend in perfectly with surrounding healthy teeth, and you care for implants just like you do the rest of your teeth. Once you’ve had your implant for a few weeks, we bet you’ll hardly notice a difference!

Professional In-Office Teeth Whitening vs. Take-Home Kits

hand tossing whitening tray and syringe with gel

Let’s face it: most of us wish that our smile was at least a little whiter. Maybe you’ve tried whitening toothpastes or mouthwashes, or even over-the-counter whitening kits and strips. But if those haven’t given you the results you’re looking for, consider professional whitening treatments. At Paris Mountain Dental, Dr. Ghimire offers both in-office whitening and take-home whitening kits. If you’re wondering which option is best for you, read on to learn a bit more about each.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

At our Travelers Rest dental office, we offer ZOOM!® in-office whitening. This is a powerful whitening option for patients looking for a dramatic change. In fact, ZOOM! can brighten your teeth up to 8 shades in just an hour – that’s something to smile about!

What’s even better is that we handle the whole process for you. Just make an appointment, come in, and relax in the dental chair. We take care of the rest. Once we’re all finished – the whole appointment takes about an hour – you’ll want to show everyone how beautifully white your smile is.

Take-Home Whitening Kits

Busy schedule keeping you from making that whitening appointment? We may have a great solution in our custom take-home whitening kits. After a quick appointment to get molds of your teeth, we have trays made that fit your teeth perfectly. You’ll also get professional-strength whitening gel. Then you can whiten at home on your own schedule, making it more convenient than ever to get professional whitening results.

Which Is Best for You?

This really depends on your needs, schedule, and budget. Both give you great results, but if you experience tooth sensitivity, take-home kits might be a better option because they give you the ability to manage how much gel you use and how often. For patients who want to get quick results, say over their lunch break, our in-office whitening is a perfect option because the appointment is quick. And depending on your budget, our flexible financial options can help make sure a beautiful smile is affordable.

If you’re ready to stop hiding a yellow smile anytime anyone says, “Say cheese!” give our team at Paris Mountain Dental a call. We can help you decide which whitening option is best for you, so you can start showing off a beautifully white smile!

What Are Mini Dental Implants?

hands holding question exclamation marks

Mini dental implants are one way for patients to replace missing teeth who can’t or don’t want to use conventional restoration options. One of the most popular ways to permanently replace missing teeth is with dental implants, but some patients are uneasy about doing that level of surgery. Other patients lack the bone mass needed in their jaw bone to hold dental implants securely. Mini dental implants give these patients a great alternative!

Mini Dental Implants vs Traditional Dental Implants

Compared to regular implants, mini dental implants have the same structure, they are just a little smaller. With dental implants we insert a titanium post into the jaw bone, and then attach a replacement tooth to the post to create a stable, reliable replacement. While a regular dental implant is between 3 and 5 mm wide, a mini implant is just 1 to 3 mm in diameter.

We can use mini dental implants to secure dentures, as well, which helps to reduce slippage while chewing and speaking. So if you currently wear dentures that slip or click, or if you’re tired of the messy adhesives used with your dentures, consider mini dental implants!

How to Take Care of Mini Dental Implants

Care for your mini dental implants like your natural teeth. Simply floss and brush as you normally would. You can use a soft-bristled brush after the procedure if your gums are feeling a little sensitive. When you take care of your mini dental implants properly, they can last a lifetime.

At Paris Mountain Dental, we provide tooth replacement options including implant restoration and replacement, denture stabilization with mini dental implants, and traditional start-to-finish dental implants. If you’re missing teeth and want to discuss which replacement option is right for you, give our friendly team a call to schedule a consultation.

Dental Implant FAQs to Calm Your Fears

ghimire-dentalimplant

What is a Dental Implant?

As an alternative to dentures, dental implants serve as artificial roots for your replacement tooth. As the restoration process continues, Dr. Binju Ghimire will place a crown over your implant so it feels and looks like a natural tooth. Thanks to precise, professional dentistry, the implant will match the look of your other teeth.

What Does an Implant Do?

Dental implants fill gaps in your teeth while maintaining the shape of your face. Not only do dental implants restore the smile you’ve missed, they also support your cheeks and lips while preventing bone loss in your jaw.

Will it Hurt?

It shouldn’t. Paris Mountain Dentist is a practice which prides itself on compassion driven excellence. With procedures such as implant placement, our team keeps very aware of patient comfort. Rest assured, the area will be properly anesthetized so you are not in pain.

Are Dental Implants Hard to Maintain?

Absolutely not. With regular appointments at our office and proper care for your teeth and gums, the implants can last a lifetime! In fact, you just take care of the implant the way all your other teeth. Brush, floss, and keep your surrounding gums healthy.

Are you still not too sure how you feel about the process? Please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to serving you as we help to calm your fears.

Braces Throwdown: Which Orthodontic Treatment is Right for You

Teeth straightening is not just for teenagers anymore – today’s modern orthodontics treatments take into consideration the utility of removable, clear orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign. Traditional braces are still a great option for some, so today we will discuss which orthodontic treatment is right for you.

ghimire-ortho

Invisalign®

Invisalign has become a very popular alternative to traditional wire braces. This product is a set of custom-made, plastic aligner trays that you wear for most of the day. The trays are clear and many people won’t notice you’re wearing them at all. You can remove them for eating or important meetings, whereas with traditional braces you obviously do not have that option. Aligner therapy is good for mild to moderate crookedness, and also for correcting overbites and spacing issues.

Fastbraces®

Looking for an affordable, fast-working orthodontic treatment that is effective and allows you to get on with your life? Fastbraces is an accelerated treatment option that uses clear brackets and can take as little time as just a few weeks up to a year. Fastbraces are more discreet and also a faster treatment option for adults and teenagers that need more intensive straightening than options like Invisalign can provide.

Conventional Metal Braces

Metal braces are the traditional method for straightening teeth, as they are a tried and proven method which can be adjusted to your specific needs throughout the treatment. Traditional braces are also more affordable, and can allow your dentist to make slight adjustments throughout your treatment as needed.

How Does My Diet Affect My Oral Health?

healthy foods for teeth
We all know the phrase: “You are what you eat!”, but that phrase cannot be more true than when it comes to your oral/dental health. There are certain foods you should consume sparingly and there are certain foods you should incorporate into your diet as much as possible. Our body is comprised of 60-70% water and the food we eat are the ingredients that help to properly balance that water’s pH level. Our pH level helps determine our overall health and assist in regulating bacteria levels throughout our system. Read below to find out more about which foods you should be consuming and which foods you should be avoiding in order to regulate your body to the best of its ability.

Good Foods & Beverages

Foods that are good for your oral health are ones that do not contain sugars, first and foremost. Then, foods that are “scrubbers” are great for your oral health. “Scrubbers” are foods that are crisp, fibrous, and natural. Examples of such foods are: celery, apples, carrots, and any other fruit or vegetable that really has some toughness and scrubbing ability to its flesh and/or composition. These foods also promote saliva production, which will in turn help reduce the amount of plaque bacteria within your mouth.

Beverages that are good for your oral health are basically anything that doesn’t have added sugars or alcohol. Water, tea, natural/organic juices, organic milk, etc… These beverages promote general well-being and allow your teeth to not be eroded by high amounts of sugar, which is the leading contributor to tooth decay.

The Overall Consensus

Diet not only benefits oral health, it benefits your greater being. The choices you make each and every day in terms of what you’re eating will affect you one way or another. As mentioned earlier, the main contributing factor to a mouth full of cavities is a high sugar diet combined with poor oral hygiene. When you think of the pH levels in your body, think of the fact that our body is essentially a pool, and when a pool has an unbalanced pH level, whether too acidic or too basic, certain bacteria will thrive and certain bacteria will die. The key is to find the perfect balance to the best of your ability and go from there. We hope this article has been informative and we hope it inspires you to make the change today to start incorporating healthy foods into your diet and removing the unhealthy foods as soon as possible!
