Kids Dentistry

Resources for Parents

When should I bring my child in for their first dental visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises that children should be brought in for their first dentist appointment no later than when they turn 1 year old.

How often does my child need to see the dentist?

We recommend that you bring your child in every six months so that we can check for any cavities and make sure there are no developing concerns.

Are X-rays safe for my child?

Because we are equipped with digital X-rays with significantly lower levels of radiation and use lead aprons for protection, there is very little risk.

Is thumb-sucking an issue for my child’s teeth?

While a normal habit for infants, we recommend bringing your child in for an evaluation if they continue to suck their thumb after the age of 3 so we can prevent issues with crooked or misaligned teeth.

What do I do if my child has a toothache?

First, rinse the area with warm salt water, and if your child’s face is swollen, place a cold compress on the area. Then, make an appointment with our office so we can take a look at the issue.

What happens if my child loses a permanent tooth?

If possible, locate the tooth, hold it by the crown, and try replacing it in the socket. If you are unable to reinsert it, put the tooth in a glass of milk and bring your child to our office immediately.

How can I get my kid excited about brushing their teeth?

Getting your child to brush can be a challenge. Try making it feel more like an exciting activity and less like a chore. Here are some of our team’s favorite ideas. You can create a game around brushing for two minutes, play a fun song and have a toothbrush dance party, let them pick out a fun toothbrush, or reward your child for brushing every night with a sticker or extra playtime.
